Event Details
Our Spray Technique Analysis and Research (STAR®) and NESHAP training is geared towards professional painters and paint instructors. The STAR® program was developed by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) at the University of Northern Iowa and is dedicated to improving the overall efficiency of manual spray coating operations by enhancing the techniques of spray technicians. This training is brought to you on behalf of the Department of Ecology.
Details of Training
The training consists of a four (4) hour course, in two parts. The first part is a 1-1.5 hour lecture talking about the various topics of STAR and NESHAP. The second part is a 3D Virtual Simulation where the painters participating in the training will experience painting an auto-body part to show examples of what was taught in the lecture. They will be able to see their transfer efficiency (TE) by color, notice triggering, and view overspray. The gun registers the angle of spray both vertically and horizontally to help the painter adjust to get as direct a spray on the product as possible. The training on average has 10-15 participants per training. The training will cover:
- The importance of gun adjustments to achieve proper air and fluid pressure
- The importance of good equipment maintenance
- Calibration and use of the LaserTouch™ technology
- Proper spray gun distance and orientation
- Spray overlap and edge painting techniques to achieve maximum efficiency
Benefits
Increasing your efficiency in spray painting is important for many reasons. Minimizing overspray lowers cost as you reduce the volume of paint mixed and sprayed. It can reduce the release of toxic air emissions, potentially reducing health risks associated with exposure and impacts to the surrounding community. Other benefits include:
- Reduced Hazardous Waste Generation
- Lower Permit Costs (depending on location)
- Reduced Health Impacts
- Material Savings - An industrial facility can save as much as $40,000 or more annually
- Reduced Environmental Impacts
- Reduced Environmental Liabilities
- Improve Efficiency by 25%+
