The forum sought to demonstrate to businesses that by combining lean and environmental principles, they can:
- Increase productivity while reducing environmental impact;
- Create an engaged, innovative workforce while improving health, ergonomics and material (or information) flow; and,
- Reduce lead time while simultaneously reducing solid and hazardous waste.
The presenters discussed how lean and green strategies can be simultaneously employed to capitalize on the benefits of both strategies. They also provided information on how to access resources and assistance from Washington Manufacturing Services (WMS), from the Washington State Department of Ecology, and from the Green Suppliers Network.
Three Washington case studies were presented, demonstrating how three Northwest companies to save over $1.4 annually in environmental and productivity improvements with assistance from WMS and the Department of Ecology. Collectively, they also reduced their annual output of volatile organic emissions by over 55,000 pounds, dangerous waste by 29,000 pounds, and wastewater by 21,000 pounds. Additionally, they reduced their consumption of hazardous substances and natural gas by 68,000 pounds and 12.6 million cubic feet respectively.
