Project Name: Methylene Chloride Replacement with Environmentally Safer Solvents in Thermostat Adhesive Systems Using Hot Coating Techniques

Date Last Updated: 9/98

Project Summary: Examines the replacement of methylene chloride with an organic solvent blend as carrier solvent in thermostat adhesive for use in flexible composites for electronics and aerospace industries. Research resulted in a method to eliminate use of methylene chloride in manufacture of tapes, composites and laminates for electronic interconnects. Sheldahl has been able to replace much of the adhesive with alternative resins and adhesive blends, except for some high performance products. The capital expenditure necessary to implement the new adhesive blend permanently into full-scale production was estimated to be between $12,000 - $15,000. Raw material and labor costs are approximately the same as the methylene-chloride based system. Mix time for the new adhesive blend was improved, and acceptable product quality achieved. The comapny intends to implement the method on a manufacturing scale.
