Green Chemistry Breakthrough in Plastics Recycling (03/10/2010)
Scientists at IBM and Stanford University said Tuesday that they have developed a new method of making plastics that will permit more than one recycling cycle. While plastics are recyclable today, the resulting materials have been limited to second generation reuse only. This means things made from recycled plastic bottles are disposed in landfills.

Washington is first to tackle toxic copper in brakes (03/10/2010)
Washington state has done it again, being the first state in the country to take a legal stand against a toxic chemical. The Legislature this week voted to phase out cooper in brake pads, provided there are reasonable alternatives and that research continues to suggest that brake pads are contributing significant amounts of toxic copper. The bill is Senate Bill 6557.

Home Depot stores increase energy efficiency (03/09/2010)
Home improvement giant The Home Depot recently announced that energy efficiency measures taken at U.S. stores have led to a reduction of energy use by 2.6 billion kWh since 2004. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to reducing its energy use by 20 percent per square foot in the next five years. If you've never been to one of their stores, they are massive shells filled with a variety of home improvement products. I can't even begin to imagine how much energy these stores use so I applaud The Home Depot for working to improve energy efficiency across the board.

Smokestash Industry: ARPA-E Seeks Breakthroughs in Carbon Capture Technology (03/09/2010)
Every second, our bodies capture carbon dioxide in our tissues, transport it via the blood, and dump it in the lungs from where it is exhaled. This unconscious process is yet another way humans contribute to the accumulation of the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere--albeit in a miniscule volume compared with burning fossil fuels. The key to this metabolic process is an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase and it's efficiency at capturing and releasing CO2 is what human engineers want to mimic at the power plant scale.

How Ocean Bacterium Turns Carbon Into Fuel (03/04/2010)
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We hear this mantra time and again. When it comes to carbon‹the "Most Wanted" element in terms of climate change‹nature has got reuse and recycle covered. However, it's up to us to reduce. Scientists at Harvard Medical School are trying to meet this challenge by learning more about the carbon cycle, that is, the process by which carbon moves from the atmosphere into plants, oceans, soils, the earth's crust, and back into the atmosphere again.

Algae: Not Just for Fuel Anymore (03/01/2010)
By now, many have heard algae being proclaimed as the fuel source that could potentially replace a large percentage of the petroleum we use. However, non-fuel uses of algae that can further lessen our dependence on petroleum have not gotten the attention they deserve. One such usage, while far less visible and but whom some would argue is just as important, is creating plastics.

Discovery in Legumes Could Reduce Fertilizer Use, Aid Environment (03/01/2010)
Nitrogen is vital for all plant life, but increasingly the planet is paying a heavy price for the escalating use of nitrogen fertilizer.
