Neutralization

Description

  • Adjust the pH of an acid or alkaline bath to around 7
  • Compatible acid baths and alkaline cleaners may be used to neutralize one another

Advantages

  • Possibly less expensive disposal cost; either off-site disposal or possible discharge to a POTW
  • Some waste may no longer designate as dangerous waste after neutralization

Implementation Process

  • Determine the compatibility of acidic and alkaline baths and solvents
  • Identify the regulations that affect the treatment, including
    • Wastewater discharge permit
    • Dangerous waste treatment-by-generator
  • Develop a procedure so that the correct amount of each chemical is added, without over-treating
  • Train employees on proper procedures and tracking
