Neutralization
Description
- Adjust the pH of an acid or alkaline bath to around 7
- Compatible acid baths and alkaline cleaners may be used to neutralize one another
Advantages
- Possibly less expensive disposal cost; either off-site disposal or possible discharge to a POTW
- Some waste may no longer designate as dangerous waste after neutralization
Implementation Process
- Determine the compatibility of acidic and alkaline baths and solvents
- Identify the regulations that affect the treatment, including
- Wastewater discharge permit
- Dangerous waste treatment-by-generator
- Develop a procedure so that the correct amount of each chemical is added, without over-treating
- Train employees on proper procedures and tracking
