Evaporation
Description
- Use atmospheric or vacuum evaporation to recover chemicals in wastewater
Advantages
- Concentrates chemicals in baths and rinses
- May enable recovory and reuse of these chemicals
- Concentrate them to produce a lesser volume of hazardous waste
- Evaporation in rinse tanks minimizes flow into water treatment systems
- Can allow well designed and operated rinse systems to have zero discharge
Limitations
- Not suitable for concentrated cyanide or chrome solutions
- Temperature limits of process chemicals must be monitored
Implementation Process
- Perform a cost analysis, including:
- reduced chemical loss
- reduced waste generation
- capital investment
- possible permitting fees
- increased energy
- Obtain an air permit, if necessary
- Purchase and install baths heaters, and/or a commercially available evaporator
- Determine the optimal operating conditions (temperature, etc)
- Develop a standard operating procedure to keep operation within an exceptable range around the optimal conditions
- Train employees on necessary monitoring and tracking procedures
