Copper Cyanide

Description

  • Use alkaline copper instead of copper cyanide
  • Discontinue use of cyanide

Advantages / Limitations

Alkaline bath (non-cyanide)
  • Cannot yet replace cyanide processes in all applications (ie: barrel plating zinc die castings due to the formation of a non-adhering immersion copper deposit)
  • Many operate between the same plating properties as cyanide-copper baths
  • Typically operate between 130 and 150oF, with air agitation
  • Analysis and routine additions of the complexer are all that are typically needed to maintain the bath
  • Removal of metallic impurities might be a major problem
  • Alkalinity of the bath reduces corrosion tendency of un-plated surfaces such as internal areas of tubular parts
  • Ideal for plating over iron, steel, pot metals
